Worsley paving tender awarded
The board of trustees awarded the paving contract for Worsley Central School parking lot to Ruel Concrete. PRSD received three tenders with Ruel Concrete submitting the lowest bid, which was in the amount of $388,843.00. The paving project is scheduled to be completed this summer. On May 21, 2020, the Alberta Government announced that school divisions would be allocated one-time funding for capital projects on school buildings as a means to create jobs and boost the Alberta economy in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. PRSD is pleased to partner with Clear Hills County on the project who committed $199,000 to the total cost.
Student Transportation Task Force to meet in Peace River
The board of trustees made a motion to have a delegation attend a proposed meeting on July 9, 2020, regarding the newly formed Student Transportation Task Force, which was assembled by Alberta Education. The Student Transportation Task Force, whose intent is to examine the transportation system, including but not limited to eligibility, legislation and regulation, school board responsibility for transportation, safety and cooperation. The Task Force aims to provide a report to the Minister of Education, Adriana LaGrange, by the Fall of 2020. The Student Transportation Task Force will be hosting several meetings across the province at the end of June and will meet in Peace river on Friday, July 9, 2020.
Board celebrates PRSD’s Technology Manager for receiving international technology award
In a special ceremony held yesterday, the Peace River School Division (PRSD) board of trustees celebrated Shayne Pierson, PRSD’s Manager of Technology Services for receiving the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) “Interactive Videoconferencing Network Classroom Educator Award.” The international award recognizes educational technology leaders for their work in using video conferencing in innovative ways to advance education. Pierson was selected specifically for his leadership in connecting classrooms throughout the division via Google Meet technology to increase course options for students. PRSD’s latest Government “Report Card” shows continued growth
During the regular board meeting held yesterday, Superintendent Paul Bennett with the board of trustees reviewed Peace River School Division’s (PRSD) results from Alberta Education’s Accountability Pillar Report (APR). PRSD is pleased to report that six of the twelve measures updated on the May 2020 APR have increased, and in four measures, PRSD exceeds provincial averages. “We share in this celebration of improvement and continued growth with our school communities,” says Board Chair Darren Kuester. “The improved results reflect the dedication of our students, staff, and parents as well as the involvement and collaboration of our communities that provide increased support and opportunities for students.” PRSD exceeded provincial averages in the areas of Safe and Caring, Citizenship, Parental Involvement and School Improvement. PRSD’s First Nations Metis and Inuit APR results also exceed provincial averages in the areas of Drop Out Rate, High School Completion Rate (3 years), Diploma Exam Participation Rate and Rutherford Scholarship Eligibility Rate. Board of Trustees to draft plan focusing on racism
The PRSD board of trustees directed administration to research both professional development and racism sensitivity training for board members and senior administration within PRSD. Trustees will also be looking to prepare a divisional anti-racism statement along with a detailed plan for anti-racism education in PRSD. Board chair Darren Kuester stated, “PRSD is a diverse school division, and we are making a commitment to do things differently.”
Superintendent Bennett provides COVID-19 update
Superintendent Bennett provided the board of trustees with a summary of data regarding the PRSD survey that was sent out in early June to all PRSD students and parents regarding the learning-at-home and the eventual re-entry to school. Board holds 2020-2021 Organizational Meeting - Kuester and Owens elected in board leadership roles
The Peace River School Division (PRSD) Board of Trustees held its organizational meeting on Thursday, June 25, 2020, where both Darren Kuester and Crystal Owens were elected for the roles as Board Chair and Vice-Chair respectively. Darren Kuester, Ward three trustee, has served three terms on the board and seventh consecutive year as Board Chair. “Peace River School Division is an exceptional school division that is truly focused on ensuring the success of every student, and I am proud to be a part of such a dedicated team,” says Kuester. “I am pleased to continue as Board Chair, and together with fellow trustees, I am dedicated to being a strong advocate for our students and proudly support all that public education represents.” Crystal Owens, ward two trustee, is serving her third year on the board and first year as Vice-Chair. “Our division provides students with an all-encompassing educational experience and continually evolves to meet the needs of students in our changing world,” says Owens. “We are passionate about ensuring our students are provided with everything they need to reach their full potential, and I look forward to serving as Vice-Chair in the fall.
